I'm just as strange as you

Maybe it's because I'm arty, but I always thought Frida Kahlo was well known. That was until I went to a party dressed as her and only one person knew who I was. But that's cool, it made me feel cultured. It's just that, as far as dead people go, I think she's been a kind of big part of my life, or at least my art life, if that's a thing. So just in case you are not of the enlightened few, here's a bit of Frida inspiration.

“I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it's true I'm here, and I'm just as strange as you.”

“I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.”

“I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration.”

“I paint flowers so they will not die.”

"Really, I do not know whether my paintings are surrealist or not, but I do know that they are the frankest expression of myself."

"I am not sick. I am broken. But I am happy to be alive as long as I can paint."

"At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can."

"Feet, what do I need them for if I have wings to fly."

(and this was just after she'd had a foot amputation)

She's not only an inspiration in art, I think she's such a style icon. She rocked flower crowns before Rookie made them cool, and I love her chunky jewellery and colourful prints. Plus, Frida is probably one of the main reasons why I no longer hate my big eyebrows.

Now you should definitely go and check out more of her work.

  1. I choose the same character for my halloween costume! Just because in my school there was a Mexican Party, "El dia de los muertos" (the day of the deaths), so was easy to choose, and because I study in an art's school, everybody known who I was hahahahah
Thats why I love your post very much, you put some of her quotes that I didn't know, so thank you very much!
Soon I will post my costume in my blog, but I want to see yours!

    1. Thank you!
Haha :) That sounds really cool, I'd like to go to Mexico for "El dia de los muertos" one day!
I'll keep a look out for your costume!!

  2. Whoa, really, only one person? Sadness. Your costume is sick though, and also she is queen. Love this post.
